Blue & White Brew 7/13: Power Play

Today, we're starting the day off with a little rock.

Good morning! Today is International Rock Day. But don’t start watching Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson highlights or listening to the Foo Fighters—today is about good ol’ fashioned minerals, magma, and boulders.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Penn State has its very own Rock Ethics Institute, dedicated to promoting engaged ethics research and leadership? (No word yet on their opinion of pebbles.)

For those who rock, here’s what we’ve got in today’s Brew.

🔺 Center Ice. One of Penn State’s youngest women’s hockey team members is getting an opportunity of a lifetime! Tessa Janecke has been selected to participate in the 2023 USA Hockey Women's National Festival on August 7-13 in Lake Placid, New York.

The sophomore forward joins 76 other athletes who will participate in the event next month. The festival brings the top American female players from the U18 level to the national team. This will assist in evaluating the 2023-2024 U.S. Women's National Team set to compete during the Rivalry Series scheduled for later this year.

🔺 Hello, My Name Is... More announcements for hires in Penn State’s athletic department keep coming. Here are a few more names added to the list:

🤸 Lynnzee Brown has been named the newest assistant coach for women’s gymnastics. Brown joins the Nittany Lions following an illustrious gymnastics career at Denver, where she was a co-national champion, a 10-time WCGA Postseason All-American, and a two-time AAI Award finalist.

🥍 Taylor Vanthof joins the women’s lacrosse team as their new offensive coordinator. The two-time second-team All-American and Tewaaraton Award semifinalist arrives in Happy Valley after a three-year stint as an assistant coach at Ohio State.

🦁 ONE BIG THING

Lion in the sand. Later this month, Penn State’s football team will have a unique opportunity for some fans to meet their favorite team players.

On Thursday, July 27, there will be a NIL reception at the Avalon Yacht Club. Attendants will be able to meet head coach James Franklin, current players like Nick Singleton, and Nittany Legends, including LaVar Arrington.

🤔 BLUE & WHITE TRIVIA

Legend of the Lion. There was no defensive player on the field than LaVar Arrington during his time at Happy Valley—and it earned him enough buzz to become Washington’s second overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft.

Our question today is—after Washington, who is the only other NFL team the Nittany Lion played for?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: The New York Giants (2006)

After spending six seasons in Washington, LaVar Arrington moved north to the division rival New York Giants.

Even though he called it a career after 2006 and one season with the Big Blue, the former first-round pick finished with three Pro Bowl nominations and 417 career tackles.

🦁 Have a great Thursday, y’all.
