📈 STOCK UP

🔺 Going, Going, Gone. Penn State baseball graduate student pitcher Daniel Ouderkirk was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 18th round, 547th overall, in the 2023 MLB Draft—joining junior shortstop Jay Harry, a sixth-round pick by the Minnesota Twins, as Nittany Lions selected in the 2023 MLB Draft.

This is the ninth time in program history Penn State has had multiple draft picks in the Top 20 rounds in same year and the fourth time Penn State has had multiple draft picks in the same year since 2016.

🔺 All-American. Late last week, three student-athletes from the Penn State women's golf team were honored as All-American Scholars by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA).

Seniors Sarah Willis, Mathilde Delavallade and Isha Dhruva each received this prestigious honor. Each of the women have earned the honor for at least three straight years. For Willis, this will be her fifth-straight season with the title.

In order to be a part of the All-American Scholar Team, one must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50—it’s one of the toughest criteria in all of college athletics, so it’s an outstanding accomplishment!

🔺 New Additions. There will be many new faces across the coaching staff’s of multiple sports in 2023 and 2024. Along with Coach Mike Gambino and Alex Gallegher, three more names join the list—John Haus, Ayla Halus-Johnson, and Oscar Umar will all be joining the Nittany Lion family.

🥍 John Haus has been promoted to head coach of the men’s lacrosse team after he spent the previous six seasons as an assistant coach.

🏑 Ayla Halus-Johnson comes from William & Mary and will be the assistant coach for the field hockey team.

⚽ Oscar Umar will be an assistant coach for men’s soccer after spending time at Washington University in St. Louis.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Toby Frymire (1965)

While Cal Emery was the first player from Penn State signed to an MLB team in 1958, he was an undrafted free agent.

Toby Frymire, a catcher, was taken by the New York Mets in the 45th round at pick 736. (The photo above shows him with his little league team in 1950!)

At least players today don’t have to wait 45 rounds to know their future 😂

🦁 Have a great Wednesday, y’all.
