Blue & White Brew 7/20: Giant Leap

Today, we're taking small steps and giant leaps towards football season.

Good morning! On this date 54 years ago, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the moon for the first time. So, whether it’s that one budget report you’ve been putting off for weeks or a nagging chore around the house, remember that small steps sometimes add up to one giant leap.

What else did we launch into today’s Brew?

🏈 Sophomores, on your mark…
🏒 Lyndie Lobdell gets called up
🦁 And much, much more!

🔺 Part Of The Action. If you’re in line, stay in line. Or at least keep refreshing that web browser. Sophomores are up today for Penn State football season tickets and (we cannot stress this enough) you’ve gotta be ready at 7 a.m. on the dot. Why? Well…

Graduate students sold out in 27 minutes.

Seniors sold out in 18 minutes.

Juniors sold out in 20 minutes.

Will sophomores move into the top spot? (I wouldn’t risk it.)

🔺 Lions On Ice. Penn State women's ice hockey senior defenseman Lyndie Lobdell has been selected to participate in the 2023 USA Hockey Women's National Festival on August 7-13 in Lake Placid, New York. She joins 77 other athletes including teammate Tessa Janecke who will participate in the festival next month, bringing together the top American female players from the U18 level to the national team.

This is Lobdell's second appearance with USA Hockey as she played for the U18 USA team where they won gold in 2020 at the IIHF U18 World Championships.

The Aurora, Illinois native was part of Penn State's championship season as she skated in 38 games and tallied two goals alongside a career-high 14 assists for 16 points. She also led the team in blocked shots last year, tallying 70 on the year.

🤔 BLUE & WHITE TRIVIA

Who’s that Nittany Lion? We’re just 44 days away from kickoff and to help us celebrate, we’re featuring the program leader in rushing touchdowns—this Penn State running back holds the career record, finishing just one shy of 44 scores on the ground from three seasons in Happy Valley.

Can you name that Penn State player?

🦁 ONE BIG THING

Four scored. Penn State soccer will see the return of four upperclassmen who will be keys to the roster this fall—Kris Shakes, Liam Butts, Alex Stevenson, and Owen Elliott are coming back for their fifth seasons.

Leading the way is professional soccer draftee Liam Butts who will finish out his collegiate career during his fifth season this fall after being drafted 33rd overall in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft by the San Jose Earthquakes.

The forward has played in 63 games wearing the blue and white and has totaled 22 goals and 50 points. His decorated 2022 season, with a Big Ten and National Player of the Week nod led him to second team All-Big Ten in the postseason.
