Heat stroke occurs when the body’s natural cooling mechanisms fail, causing core temperature to rise rapidly—often to 103°F or higher. At this stage, the skin may appear red and feel hot, and sweating typically stops. Symptoms can include confusion, disorientation, or loss of consciousness, making it a medical emergency. Each year, approximately 700 people in the U.S. die from heat-related causes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Milder cases, such as heat exhaustion, can often be treated at home by moving to a cooler environment—ideally indoors with air conditioning—and rehydrating with water to help restore the body’s cooling function.
