Feeling dizzy isn’t always the same as vertigo — while dizziness can mean lightheadedness or imbalance, vertigo is often a true spinning sensation linked to the inner ear. Nearly 40% of adults will experience vertigo at some point, with common causes including inner ear crystal shifts (BPPV), fluid changes (Meniere’s disease) or viral infections affecting balance. Most cases are treatable, sometimes with simple maneuvers or lifestyle changes. Seek care right away if dizziness comes with sudden hearing loss, severe headache or weakness.
